Points to Note When Writing Reports
1) Read the question carefully to understand what information is needed.
2) Exclude unneccessary information.
3) Rewrite the answer in your own words.
4) Retain technical words (eg.cellular prion protein)
5) Insert the in-text citation immediately after the information from the original source is
mentioned.
6) Create the reference list using guidelines presented in the notes.
7) If you need more information to enter the reference list entry,you need to proactively do
research to retrieve the information.
Assignment: Explain how prions acts as the aetiological agent to Mad Cow Disease.
Answer:
Prions share the same primary structure as the cellularprion protein but they have a different configuration. Research has indicated that prions are the cause of Mad Cow Disease. Found mainly in the brain and nervous systems of cattle, prions are not affected by high temperatures, ultra-violet light, ionizing radiation, common sterilization procedures and standard disinfectants that are usually used to eradicate viruses and bacteria ( Scheier 2005).
When there is interaction of prions with cellular prion protein , the latter takes on a different shape and consequently, abnormality occurs ( Mocsny and Lashley 2002). Mad Cow Disease thus results from the accumulation of abnormal prions in the brain and central nervous system.
